It was held at Riverside Park in Vero Beach as a dog-walk fundraiser and adoption event – but it was really a fun fest for all those in attendance.
Humane Society Executive Director Chalmers Morse believes that more than 7,500 people came out to support the Society's efforts, but it was not as smooth as it looked. With torrential rains for days before, Morse found the park under water on Friday and had to come up with a drying solution quickly.
"The field was covered in water and we knew we couldn't hold the event if we couldn't get the water removed," said Morse. "So we worked with one of our partners, Milt Wilcox from the Ultimate Air Dock Jumping Dogs, dug holes and pumped the water into the retention pond."
By Saturday morning, the field was ready for the Pet Parade Walk, where dogs were dressed in costume and people walked around the perimeter in honor of a beloved lost pet or in honor of one of the animals in the shelter.
