For the Love of Paws pet food pantry won't let needy cats and dogs go hungry

FELLSMERE — Since the pandemic began in 2020, Ted Pankiewicz has seen many different people frequenting the pet-food pantries he operates in Fellsmere and Vero Beach.

While the For the Love of Paws pantry was originally founded to help provide pet food to senior citizens, veterans and the disabled, more and more unemployed and underemployed workers have been stopping by the pantry to get free food for their cats and dogs.

In the past months, Pankiewicz has supplied 10,000 pounds of pet food each month to help people in the community struggling to feed their animals.

That astonishing number has earned Pankiewicz proclamations from the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners as well as from the Sebastian City Council for his work in the community.

2021 Hurricane Season Planning!

Indian River County Pet Evacuation Shelter

Indian River County has designated Liberty Magnet School at 6850 81st Street in Vero Beach as the county’s pet-friendly evacuation shelter. The Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County has accepted the responsibility of helping manage this shelter.

The ONLY shelter of last resort. You need to reserve space. Alternatively, see if your vet boards. I recommend Dr. Kirby and Live Oak Animal Hosp.

“Space in the pet-friendly shelter will be on a first-come-first-served basis,” says Etta LoPresti, Indian River County Emergency Management Coordinator.  Completing the registration form prior to your arrival will make the check-in process easier and more efficient.  If you have any questions, contact Ilka Daniel at or 772-571-6408
